UnMode fixes cases of mass transfer of Ukrainian prisoners from the colonies of russia - to the temporarily occupied Kherson region.
We managed to get in touch with a group of Ukrainians who are waiting to be “transported” to the temporarily occupied Gennichensk (Kherson region, Ukraine) in one of the russian colonies. According to the guys themselves, they were informed about the upcoming large-scale construction work. At the same time, the administration of the correctional colony does not tell us or the Ukrainian prisoners themselves on what basis and in what legal status such “transportation” takes place. We receive information about the formation of such “transfers” from our contact persons in a number of other russian correctional institutions.
All our sources report that after the forced and illegal "transportation" in the future, not a single Ukrainian prisoner got in touch. According to our information, it could be more than 100 people. There is no information in any open judicial database in russia about the official change of regime for prisoners who applied to Unmode.
Recall:
In the fall of 2022, more than 2,500 Ukrainians who were in the institutions of the penitentiary system of the temporarily occupied Kherson region of Ukraine were taken by russian special services through Crimea to Russia. After the end of the term of serving the sentence, the released Ukrainians are transferred indefinitely to the local TDCFC (Temporary Detention Center for Foreign Citizens). There is currently no single mechanism for the deportation of such people.
We call on international human rights mechanisms to pay attention to the repeated violations of the rights of Ukrainian citizens who were forcibly transferred to the occupied territories and to Russia.
What we can do?
UnMode continues to record complaints about the illegal removal of Ukrainian prisoners, speak about the problem publicly, and engage local and international human rights organizations and the media.
UnMode plans to apply to the UN Special Procedures, to the UN Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.
We continue to support Ukrainians who are in russian prisons and are looking for resources to help each of them return home. It seems impossible, but in spite of everything, we believe in the power of civil society and in the power of goodness.
Good always and invariably conquers any evil.
