The most common cause of death in prisons in 2020 was suicide, followed by COVID-19 and drug overdose, according to the WHO report on health in prisons in the European Region.
On Wednesday, February 15, UnMode representatives took part in a WHO webinar dedicated to the presentation of the report.
The speakers at the webinar were representatives of the WHO Regional Office for Europe, ministers of health and justice of Portugal, experts from European international public organizations and institutions.
Participants raised the issues of monitoring the health status of people in prisons, preventing infectious diseases, shared the experience of national programs and discussed issues of “transition” from prison to society.
The report can be found here: https://www.who.int/europe/publications/i/item/9789289058674
We hope that the data from the WHO report will be used to improve access to medical and psycho-social services in prisons and thank the organizers for inviting the discussion.
