United Nations Agency for Refugees in the Nordic and Baltic countries (UNHCR RNB) response

Dear friends! We are happy to share some positive news in the case of 14 Ukrainian ex-prisoners we wrote about earlier.

Brief background: On January 30, 2023, 14 Ukrainians who had been in the Temporary Detention Center for Foreign Citizens of the Volgograd Region for a month were forcibly taken to the checkpoint of the Russia-Latvia border, the settlement of Ludza, for deportation from the country.

After the refusal to enter Latvia and unsuccessful attempts to contact the Embassy of Ukraine in Latvia, all 14 Ukrainians were forcibly, by the forces of the Latvian special forces, expelled to Russia, where they were again placed in the Volgograd TDCFC.

Yesterday we received a response to our appeal from the United Nations Agency for Refugees in the Nordic and Baltic countries (UNHCR RNB). The request was formulated and submitted by us on January 30, the day of the events.

In their response, the representatives of the UN Agency expressed their intention to form an official request to the Latvian authorities, requested data on the members of the group and details of the event. With the consent of the affected children, we provided this information.

  • We hope that the Latvian authorities will be able to regulate the process of accepting internally displaced Ukrainian citizens who have previously served their sentences.
  • We require the Embassy of Ukraine in Latvia to provide a written response to our official request for urgent assistance for 14 citizens of Ukraine dated January 30, 2022. We draw your attention to the fact that the UN international structure took a little more than 10 days to respond, while the Embassy of Ukraine in Latvia has not yet responded either to the situation or to our appeal on this matter.
  • We demand an official denial and a public apology from TV-NET to 14 citizens of Ukraine, who were called criminals in a publication dated January 31.
