In 2024, UnMode completed an important phase of its work in assisting victims of torture within a project supported by the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture (UNVFVT). Over the course of the year, the team provided comprehensive support to 169 beneficiaries who had suffered ill-treatment in places of detention.
The vast majority of our beneficiaries are Ukrainian citizens held in Russian correctional facilities and migration centers. They have been subjected to complete isolation, denied medical and legal assistance, and exposed to torture, ill-treatment, enforced disappearances, and inhumane detention conditions.
What Was Achieved?
Our team provided support in several key areas:
✅ Medical assistance – 10% of all services
✅ Psychological support – 10%
✅ Social assistance – 30%
✅ Legal support – 40%
✅ Humanitarian assistance – 10%
Services were delivered both online and offline, depending on the needs and accessibility of the beneficiaries.
In addition to direct assistance, we continued documenting human rights violations and advocating at the international level. Numerous cases of unlawful detention, torture, enforced disappearances, and denial of medical care were recorded.
Challenges Faced?
- The project was implemented under difficult conditions. One of the main problems was the marginalization of victims—many lacked official status, could not seek state support, and remained in complete isolation.
- We also faced pressure from authorities in the countries where beneficiaries were held, which complicated our work and posed additional risks for our staff and volunteers.
Financial Transparency
We are committed to full transparency in the use of funds. Within the project, 71% of the budget was allocated to programmatic expenses directly related to assisting beneficiaries, while 29% was spent on administrative costs. Conclusions and Future Plans
This project demonstrated that comprehensive support for victims of torture is possible even under the most challenging conditions. We not only provided essential assistance but also laid the groundwork for long-term human rights protection mechanisms.
UnMode will continue its work, expanding the scope of its programs and strengthening support for victims of torture and abuse.
